‘TAKING A LINE FOR A WALK’- Paul Klee

For this project I started by just collecting images and themes I love. I realised pretty soon that I was attracted to a graphic aesthetic, pattern and repetition. What really inspired my though was the brand Kenzo. Several of their fashion films and their print campaigns sparked a direction for my own work- Collage.

For this project I intend to work with the brand WESC to create a fashion film promoting their S/S 2014 collection. I aim to make a moving image collage which turns Paul Klee’s phrase ‘taking a line for a walk’ quite literally in a drug sense! I want the film to be like a hallucination, a trip into a psychedelic world full of colour and pattern, then combined with the collection, themes of complete freedom, love and enlightenment is created to help make the clothes seem attractive. In no way however shall this film promote drugs haha! The whole film is to be shot as if constantly moving forward, as if moving through time and space. A combination of effects shall be achieved using in camera techniques and in the editing process (in Premiere Pro and After Effects). I intend to use green screening to enable me to overlay the model into new scenarios that I have created myself. I shall teach myself using Adobe TV online, I also intend on visiting an upcoming Adobe lecture on all their moving image programmes.

So far:
I have shot a wide range of things to montage together in Premiere, such as the Falmouth Aquarium, the Oyster Festival, boats, water patterns etc. I intend on continuing to collect water based imagery so that I can see what works when I come to editing.

AWKWARDNESS.

Now looking for new inspiration for my last fashion film. I have decided I want to do something a lot more light hearted and humorous. My main inspiration has been this Russ Chimes music video as I have realised that awkwardness is something I really like at the moment, weird dance moves, it all needs to be in my next vid!

Another film that has really inspired me is this film ‘My Recurring Dream’ by André Chocron. I has some absolutely beautiful scenes, but the ones that take my attention in particular are the ones that feature rewind. I think that the potential for clever illusions could be fantastic and something I really want to play with!

I intend to collaborate with Eve from my class to make this film so we can learn from each other from what we have each done so far. I also intend to collaborate with the 3rd year fashion designers from Falmouth University.

BEYOND. A finished film.

Once I had gathered all the footage from all the shoots I couldn’t resist putting the film together straight away. I edited so that the whole was black and white, had high contrast and had a messed with speed to create more of a modern aesthetic. I think this is quite possibly one of the most epic pieces of work I have ever created. The footage took a month to gather taking up every weekend, used the biggest teams I have ever worked in to achieve all the footage, used equipment I have never used before (GoPros) so I could shoot underwater. So yeah, check it out and see what you think……

DOLLY: COUNTRY COLLECTION

I have been meeting weekly with a 3rd year designer every week, with Nicole and Elliot, as we were planning to make a fashion film of her collection. The idea was to make it fun and show an element of collective effort like this Tommy Hilfer film:

This has been our main inspiration the whole time. Her collection features 3 girls outfits and 3 boys. We wanted the to be an element of humour too.

The Plan:

3 cameras – Nicole, Elliot and I filming throughout the day

6 models- 3 girls, 3 guys

3 assistants- Dolly for styling and her two friends for labour

2 dogs!

1 vintage car

Shooting out of the car to get panning shots of the vintage car for the starting establishing shots.

The team at the picnic scene- a well deserved lunch!!

The whole team again

An example of the walking shots gathered to show their journey to the perfect picnic spot.

LOCATION SCOUTING CONTINUES.

Bodmin Moor scout: This was the last arid location I needed to find for my 3rd character. The Cheesewring. ITS PERFECT. I shall be back with a proper team and model to do it for real. Graphically its fantastic and would come out stunningly in black and white.

I got my friend to sit at the edge of this rock to see what it would look like with a model and I just can’t wait to shoot. The heigh just adds a whole other dynamic that my other locations don’t have.

Option for somewhere to film when the guys come together at the clearing.

Porthleven.  A final location possibility before the big jump, to create the illusion of a massive fall.

SUBCONSCIOUS INFLUENCES.

I hate to admit it but I now look back on my work and can totally see that a one night Twilight marathon  and watching the Hunger Games over Easter has totally had an influence on my film ‘Beyond’.

ImageThe moment I have scheduled in for when all three of the characters come together I would like to look kind of like this. They all break free from the frees to a clearing where they stop to catch their breath and just pause to think. In this scene, before everyone goes to war with each other, I would like to have the same emotion in the fact that there is apprehension for what is to come. The viewer empathises with the characters as they wait in suspense fore the characters all move. There is a feeling that once the people move that this is it, this is leading to the characters fate whether it ends or starts.

ImageThe planned pause will give me time to focus on the clothes again, as seen here in the Hunger Games.

ImageSymbolism- looking towards the sky, shall be a good way of displaying this sense of apprehension.

Image

For the running scenes I envisage sped up footage (as seen in Twilight) to show a sense of urgency and strength. It also shows the desperation of the character to reach their goal. I also like the alternative aesthetic that it creates, I don’t care if it doesn’t look natural as I intend to mess with speed throughout the film editing process- to the film a different edge.

I have decided to call the fashion film ‘Beyond’ as I feel that it sums up several areas that I cover in the film:
– the characters go above and beyond to reach their goal

-they set out to go beyond their normality to reach that sense of freedom and release

-when they make that jump for freedom they go deep into the water, beyond the darkness and disappear. They go beyond this life into the next.

FILMING BEGINS.

This weekend I started shooting for my second fashion film.

I managed to collaborate with a selection of fashion design students at Falmouth University for the styling of these shoots. James Mitchell can be seen wearing a jumper by James White, a coat by Miren Chamberlin-Ortega and a backpack created from recycled army surplus material by Franki Baseley. James Skinner wears a coat designed and made by Jake Cleave.

DAY ONE.

This day of shooting featured the model James Mitchell. I had a team of two assistants, Liam Fuller and Eve McGovren to help film from a variety of angles with a variety of lenses. We headed up to Goonhilly to start off with to get establishing shots, the model still in the surroundings, to walking/ exploring the landscape with a sense of melancholy, and then moved onto the running scenes  to capture the model’s change of mood and new sense of determination. To capture fast pans we used tripods and shot out of a car alongside the model to smoothly document the fast running. Here are a few examples of the footage:

DAY TWO.

The second days filming focused on the model James Skinner; a similar looking guy, tall slim physique but darker features. I had a team consisting of Olivia Bossert and Ed Vincent. We had the same approach as the day before to get the range of shots, angles, and stages of still/walking and running. However this time I had a glide cam as well as the equipment I had the day before so was able to get panning shots within the landscape without the help of shooting out of a car window. We started in the dunes of Gwithian and then headed to the forests of Kennal Vale. I also shot with Twixtr in mind for details that I could really slow down e.g. a foot stomping in the sand.

All in all I am VERY excited about this project and feel so happy about what’s been achieved so far!
